Sardinia is a very romantic island, with stunning scenery, a fascinating culture and warm and welcoming people. Just before my recent visit in September, I became engaged and, even though we are not planning to get married for a while, seeing so many wonderful hotels, my mind did, on more than one occasion, turn to thoughts of honeymoons. In fact, we saw quite a few lovely hotels that would be ideal for a romantic escape and there are also many beautiful private villas that would make the perfect hideaway for newly weds. Of course, we all like different things. While for some the priority might be a location right on the beach, while others might prefer the mountains. Alternatively, the style of hotel and its facilities may be of more importance than the actual setting. Here are ten Sardinian Places staff members' favourite choices of the hotels or villas that they would select as their perfect honeymoon retreat starting with mine. 1. Hotel Gabbiano Azzurro "I grew up, and still live now, by the sea and there is no more perfect place for me to be than either in or by the ocean. At the Hotel Gabbiano Azzurro on the Aranci peninsular, it feels like you are surrounded by the sea as it has water on, not just one, but two sides of the hotel. The views are really stunning. photos The hotel can arrange dolphin watching excursions, which we would love, as well as diving or snorkeling in the crystal clear waters. Rather uniquely the exhibits from an art gallery have been sunk in the sea just across the small bay so that people can snorkel over them or dive among them, which sounds really intriguing to me. I love the thought of swimming over sculptures as the fish glide amongst them. photos It wasn't just the location that drew me to this hotel: the rooms were charming and many of course had sea views and the owner and all the staff were extremely friendly and welcoming plus the food in the waterside restaurant was superb. All together, this adds up to the perfect honeymoon hotel for me. Hopefully my fiance will have the same opinion as me - he usually does!" Kathryn The Hotel Gabbiano Azzurro is new to our collection for 2014 and we're sure it will quickly become a firm favourite with our guests. 2.
